On 4 December, the NATO ministers of foreign affairs declared their solidarity for their fellow NATO-member Turkey in detering threats it is facing and defending it in the context of repeated violations of Turkey’s territory. The ministers granted Turkey’s motion of 21 November for augmenting its air defence capabilities by deploying Patrion missile batteries along its south-eastern frontier.

On 3 October, Turkey shelled Syrian troops stationed close to the border for the first time since the beginning of the crisis in Syria. It launched a few more artillery attacks over the next days. This was Ankara’s response to mortar attacks from Syria in which five people were killed in Turkey.

The actions Russia has taken during the political crisis in and around Syria, and the rhetoric of Russian politicians, have by no means been unanimous. On one hand, Russia is actively supporting Bashar Assad’s regime. On the other hand, Russia has established quasi-official contacts with representatives of the Syrian opposition and urged the authorities in Damascus to hold talks with them.
