On 19 May, the Romanian parliament amended the vetting law by imposing a five-year ban on performing important public functions by former senior representatives of communist authorities and officers and associates of the secret police, Securitate. The law may cause changes in the managements of state-controlled companies and prevent some MPs from participating in the elections in 2012. more »
On 21 April the central-rightist government of Emil Boca presented a project of changes to the constitution, which will limit the role of parliament and precisely define the provisions of the Romanian Basic Law. However, amendment of the constitution is highly unlikely, and the proposals presented are going to be first of all an element of building president Traian Basescu’s and pro-presidential Democratic and Liberal Party’s (DLP) popularity. more »
On 13 April in Bucharest, the ministers in charge of economy and energy issues representing Romania, Georgia and Azerbaijan signed an intergovernmental memorandum which formally initiated work on the AGRI (Azerbaijan–Georgia–Romania Interconnector) project enabling the direct supply of Azeri gas to the EU. The new supply route project is a demonstration of Bucharest and Baku’s strong determination to diversify their supply policies, and also indirectly indicates the crisis in which the EU’s gas pipeline project Nabucco has found itself. more »
