Analyses

  • On 6 April the major Czech parties came to a preliminary agreement on the early elections, the candidacy for Prime Minister and the establishment of the technical government. The President of the Czech Statistical Office Jan Fischer will succeed Mirek Topolanek as Prime Minister. Fischer will remain in the position until the new elections are held. The elections will probably be scheduled for 9 - 10 October 2009. The talks held about the new government are heavily influenced by the largest Czech parties: the right-wing Civic Democratic Party (ODS) of Mirek Topolanek and remaining the Social Democrats (CSSD). The latter had until now remained in opposition. The agreement between the two parties will make it impossible for President Vaclav Klaus to take over the political initiative in the country and increase his influence on the Czech presidency in the European Union (EU).
